Asphalt 101 Webinar ▼

This course provides an introduction to asphalt pavements and why they behave the way they do. In this class, you will learn about material properties and mixture components, as well as their relationship to pavement performance. Quality control and recycled materials topics are also included. This class is offered as a 2-hour webinar.

Asphalt Pavement Maintenance Popular Class! ▼

Are potholes a problem? Proper asphalt pavement maintenance techniques are important for keeping your roadways in good condition. Learn the most efficient methods for preserving the integrity of your asphalt roadways so that you can prioritize projects and maximize maintenance dollars. In this class, you will learn preventive maintenance plans, failure modes of asphalt pavements, best practices for pothole patching, crack sealing, chip sealing, and other surface treatments. This class is offered as a 3.5-hour instructor-led workshop, or as two 2-hr webinars. An optional field exercise may also be included with in-person workshops. Personnel, equipment, location, and traffic control for field exercises must be provided by the requesting agency.

Asphalt Paving Basics ▼

Everyone loves a smooth asphalt pavement, but did you know that long-term performance can be significantly impacted by the construction process? Learn how construction practices affect the final surface, and what you can do to provide a smooth ride for travelers. In this class, you will learn best practices for paving, including delivery of materials, placement and compaction, joint construction and density, and quality control / quality assurance methods. This class is offered as a 3.5-hour instructor-led workshop, or as two 2-hr webinars.

This course provides innovative ways to replace structures more efficiently, with less construction time. The training includes accelerated construction exercises, ways to protect the environment, and how to reduce road user impact cost.

Concrete 101 ▼

Whether you are new to the industry or a seasoned veteran, everyone can benefit from learning the basics of concrete. Concrete is used in a wide variety of applications and affects many tasks performed by local agencies, so it is important to know about the materials used in concrete and best practices in construction. In this class, you will learn about concrete materials, admixtures, mix design, structures, roadways, patches, consolidation, and finishing.

Culvert Sizing and Installation ▼

Avoiding potential culvert installation problems can save time and funding. This course focuses on proven practices that work and follow OSHA guidelines. These practices include proper culvert sizing, shoring, installation, maintenance, inspections, and erosion control.

Erosion Mitigation for Unpaved Roads ▼

Dirt and gravel roads are a vital part of the state’s transportation system, but these roads can experience a number of issues relating to erosion and deterioration after heavy rainfall events. This training provides best practices and innovative techniques for separating water and roadway to provide a quality roadway while also maintaining natural drainage conditions.

This course provides the required training for the Arkansas Unpaved Roads Grant Program.

Gravel Road Maintenance ▼

More than 80% of Arkansas county roads and more than 13 % of Arkansas city streets are unpaved. Maintaining these roads can be very costly and is a growing concern for our local governments. This course provides practical guidance for best practices in constructing and repairing gravel roads, as well as, stabilizing eroding drainage ditches.

Guide for Traffic Signs, Markings, and Signals Updated! ▼

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) is the national standard governing all traffic control devices, and it plays a critical role in improving the safety and mobility of road users. It is important for local agencies to be informed regarding current issues, and to be aware of updates to the requirements. This class covers MUTCD requirements for signs, markings and signals, as well as speed limits, school areas, work zones, and intersections.

Pavement Design for Local Agencies New Class! ▼

Pavement thickness is sometimes thought of as a “one size fits all” for local agencies, but thickness design can significantly affect the longevity of a pavement in a local setting. In this course, you will learn the primary considerations for determining necessary pavement thickness so that the structure will adequately support traffic for years to come. This training is applicable for county judges, mayors, engineers, planners, supervisors, and decision makers.

Managing a roadway network can be a daunting task, but learning the basics of pavement management can provide you with policies and systematic methods for maintaining quality roadways. In this class, you will learn how to establish current assets, assign condition ratings for roadways, match treatments to distresses, and explore options for implementing and customizing a pavement management system for your agency. This class is offered as a 4-hour instructor-led workshop, or as two 2-hr webinars.

Road Safety Enhancements ▼

The Federal Highway Administration has recommended a number of proven safety countermeasures, and many of these techniques are low cost and applicable to local roads. This class provides a description of specific strategies for reducing the number of accidents relating to roadway departure, intersections, and pedestrians, as well as methods for assessing risk factors on the local roadway network.

Stormwater Management ▼

Sediment from construction and maintenance activities can pollute waterways and lead to unnecessary fines. In this class, you will learn the basics of stormwater management and best management practices for preventing erosion and controlling sediment. This class is offered as a 3.5-hour instructor-led workshop, or as two 2-hr webinars.

Traffic Signal Maintenance (Advanced) Updated! ▼

This training includes current traffic signal terminology, traffic signal design requirements, operational maintenance, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and safety issues. The training also provides guidance based on the MUTCD. Basic and Advanced classes are available, maximum of 12 students per session. You must complete both days of training to receive credit for each class.

Basic Work Zone Safety NEW CLASS! ▼

This course introduces participants to the fundamentals of work zones, with a focus on safety and proper procedures. Attendees will understand the structure and function of work zones, and implement effective strategies to reduce risk and improve safety for workers.

Chain Saw Safety ▼

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 36,000 people are injured by chain saws annually. This course covers how to safely operate a chain saw, preventive maintenance, proper safety equipment, knowing your environment, and how to avoid an accident.

Confined Space Entry ▼

Many road and utility crews work in or around confined spaces which can contain potentially hazardous atmospheres. This course will train employees how to properly check and work in these environments using Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and federal guidelines.

CPR/First Aid (American Heart Association certificate) ▼

This hands-on course provides directions on how to respond to cardiac arrest, breathing, and first aid emergencies. It also provides guidance on the importance of identifying warning signs and the importance of timely responses. After completing this course, participants will receive a 2-year CPR/First Aid card.

Defensive Driving ▼

Arkansas has more than 500 roadway fatalities each year. One of the ways to reduce this number is through education. This course covers safe driving practices like, buckling up, work zone safety, intersection safety, pedestrian safety, and motorcycle safety. It also covers the danger of aggressive and distracted driving, as well as the dangers of driving under the influence.

OSHA-30 Training NEW CLASS! ▼

The OSHA 30-hour training for construction and general industry prepares supervisors and workers to avoid workplace safety and health risks. Topics covered include general worksite safety, avoiding common hazards, understanding workers' rights, employer responsibilities and more. The curriculum includes 14 hours of mandatory training topics, followed by an additional 16 hours of elective topics.

Situational Awareness New Class! ▼

This course introduces workplace safety in the light of work observation and risk mitigation. It also provides information of how employees should be aware of their surroundings for themselves and other co-workers.

Storm Safety, Preparedness, and Recovery New Class! ▼

This course is designed for DOT, municipal public works, parks, streets/roads, water, wastewater, distribution/collection, and/or storm water utility workers or any other government entity employees who may be called on for storm preparation and recovery operations, including “away” operations while providing mutual aid. Participants are grouped by department type at separate tables. Each specialty group is challenged to identify and solve storm preparedness problems common to their division. Real-life “pre-, mid- and post-storm” issues are reviewed to develop proactive storm preparedness checklists for both facilities and field tasks.

ATSSA Flagger Certification ▼

One work zone injury occurs every 14 minutes in the United States. This course provides guidelines that will help to keep the workers, equipment, and traveling public safe. It also includes safety measures for short term and long term work zone traffic control, flagging operations, traffic control technician, and supervisor training. It also covers the requirements of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) Part 6 and federal standards for signing and pavement marking applications.

Trenching and Shoring (Competent Person Certification) ▼

This course provides trenching and excavating information on how to identify hazardous workplaces and correct workplace environments as specified by OSHA and federal guidelines. This includes planning, proper assessments, measurements, site visits, and tests.

Drug and Alcohol Recognition for Supervisors Updated! ▼

This course provides information about federally mandated drug testing and how to properly conduct random drug tests. It also explains how to recognize drug and alcohol abuse and the appropriate steps to take when a problem has been identified.
